Mounting issue vxfs file system

vxfs mount: /dev/vx/dsk/rootdg/vol1 is corrupted. needs checking

We have tried the fsck, but was not successful. We are unable to mount the filesystem /local

node#

Solution:
format >> analyze >> read to fix the block 5125 error of disk c3t2d0.

#fsck -F vxfs -y /dev/vx/rdsk/rootdg/vol1

#mount /local

1. Name the mandatory disk group in VxVM 3.5 ? How will you configure VxVM in 3.5 ?
ANS: rootdg is the mandatory disk group in VxVM 3.5, vxinstall is the command to configure VxVM, It will create the disk groups, initializes the disks and adds them to the group.

2. How will you create private and shared disk group using VxVM ?
ANS: For Private DG:
Command: vxdg init

For Shared DG:
Command: vxdg -s init < disk1 disk2 disk3 >

3. Which are the different layouts for volumes in VxVM ?
ANS: mirror, stripe, concat (default one), raid5, stripe-mirror, mirror-stripe.

4. What is the basic difference between private disk group and shared disk group ?
ANS: Private DG: The DG which is only visible for the host on which you have created it, if the host is a part of cluster, the private DG will not be visible to the other cluster nodes.
Shared DG: The DG which is sharable and visible to the other cluster nodes.

5. How will you add new disk to the existing disk group ?
ANS: Run vxdiskadm command, which will open menu driven program to do various disk operations, select add disks option or you can use another command vxdiskadd.

6. How will you grow/shrink the volume/file system ? What is the meaning of growby and growto options ? What is the meaning on shrinkto and shrinkby options ?
ANS: vxassist command is used to do all volume administration, following is the description and syntax.

Growby option: This is will grow your file system by adding new size to the existing file system.

Growto option: This will grow your file system as per the new size. This WILL NOT ADD new size to the existing one.

Shrinkby option: This will shrink your file system by reducing new size from existing file system.

Shrinkto option: This will shrink your file system as per the new size. This WILL NOT REDUCE the file system by reducing new size.

Command:
vxassist -g [growto, growby, shrinkto, shrinkby] length

7. How will you setup and unsetup disks explicitly using VxVM ?
ANS: You can use /etc/vx/bin/vxdiskunsetup to unsetup the disk, and /etc/vx/vxdisksetup to setup the disk.

8. How will you list the disks, which are in different disk groups ?
ANS: vxdisk list is the command will list the disks from the DG which is currently imported, you can check the same using vxprint command too. vxdisk -o alldgs list command list all the disks which are in different dg's.

9. What is the private region in VxVM ?
ANS: Private region stores the structured VxVM information, it also stores the disk ID and disk geometry. In short words it has metadata of the disk.

10. If, vxdisk list command gives you disks status as "error", what steps you will follow to make the respective disks online ?
ANS: If you faced this issue because of fabric disconnection then simply do vxdisk scandisks, otherwise unsetup the disk using using /etc/vx/bin/vxdiskunsetup and setup the disks again using /etc/vx/bin/vxdisksetup, this will definitely help! [ /etc/vx/bin/vxdiskunsetup will remove the private region from the disk and destroys data, backup the data before using this option]

VXVM: Resolving duplicate disk/device entries in "vxdisk list" or vxdisksetup

1. Remove c1t0d0s2 entries from vxvm control
vxdisk -f rm c1t0d0s2

2.Remove the disk c1t0d0s2 using luxadm

luxadm remove_device c1t0d0s2
luxadm remove_device /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s2

Pull the disk out as per the luxadm instrunctions.

3.Run command "devfsadm -C"
4. Run command "vxdctl enable"
5. luxadm -e offline /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s2

6. Run command "devfsadm -C"
7. Run command "vxdctl enable"

9.You need to use "luxadm insert_device" to replace the disk failed device.
[Once the disk have been replaced, use "vxdctl enable" and "vxdiskadm" option 5 after syncing with the remaining mirror.]

Result:

#vxdisk list

Now both the O/S device tree and VXVM are in a clean state corresponding to disk c1t0d0s2.

Layered volume resize issue

Details:
error after resizing of volume - V-5-10542 - inconsistant log length DRL/DCM log attached with each subvolume differs in size. Equalised size of DRL or DCM log attached with each subvolume. This can be done by vxresize command
For e.g If a layered concat-mirror volume has four sub volumes. Log lengths could be found by
# vxprint -g -xmhsr | grep log_len
log_len= 198
log_len=1056
log_len= 264
log_len=90
To equalise log length issue following command:
#vxresize -g + loglen=1056 (keep the largest log size available from output of above mentioned command)
Recheck the log size associated with subvolumes:
# vxprint -g -xmhsr | grep log_len
log_len=1056
log_len=1056
log_len=1056
log_len=1056
Now vxresize command will succeed

Replace failed disk in Veritas

To replace a failed disk in Veritas, please follow the below procedure.

1. Check the failed disk using the command 'vxdisk list'

2. Run the 'format' command to see ' if the disk is offline' or 'not responding to selection'.

3. Log a service call to hardware vendor.

4. Remove the failed disk from volume manager control using the below commands.

a. Run 'vxdiskadm' as root.

b. choose option 4: Remove a disk for replacement

c. Choose the logical name corresponding the disk that has failed ( for ex. data02)

5. Get the disk replaced by the vendor.

6. Make sure the disk appears fine in the format command(no need to do any partition).

7. Run 'vxdctl enable' to enable vxconfigd sense the replaced device

8. Run 'vxdiskadm' command again and follow the below steps.

a. Choose option:5 Replace a failed or removed disk.

b. Choose the disk that was removed in step 4b(for ex. data02).

c. Choose the device corresponding to the logical name(for ex. c1t10d0)

d. Say no to 'encapsulate' and choose okay to initialise the disk to replace the failed one.

e. Accept default (no - option) for FMR plex resync option

f. Once completed successful appeared on the prompt.Exit vxdiskadm

9. Check the disks are online by running 'vxdisk list'.

Replacing a failed bootdisk

In the following example, the host has a failed bootdisk (c0t0d0). Fortunately, the system is using Veritas volume manager, with a mirror at c0t1d0. The following sequence of steps can be used to restore the system to full redundancy.
System fails to boot

When the system attempts to boot, it fails to find a valid device as required by the boot-device path at device alias "disk". It then attempts to boot from the network:

screen not found.
Can't open input device.
Keyboard not present. Using ttya for input and output.

Sun Ultra 30 UPA/PCI (UltraSPARC-II 296MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.27, 512 MB memory installed, Serial #9377973.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:8f:18:b5, Host ID: 808f18b5.

At this point, the administrator realizes that the boot disk has failed, and queries the device aliases to find the one corresponding to the veritas mirror:

Replace failed disk and restore redundancy

The administrator replaces the failed disk with a new disk of the same geometry. Depending on the system model, the disk replacement may require that the system be powered down. Once the operating system can "see" the new disk c0t0d0 via the format command, the administrator tells Veritas volume manager to rescan the system via the "vxdctl enable" command.

Remove a disk for replacement

Use this menu operation to remove a physical disk from a disk
group, while retaining the disk name. This changes the state
for the disk name to a "removed" disk. If there are any

given the option of using one of these disks as a replacement.
